Catelynn and Tyler from Teen Mom

When Teen Mom stars Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra placed their daughter Carly for adoption in May of 2009 it was one of the most heart-breaking moments in television history. For the two youngsters it was a terribly painful moment that nearly tore them both apart – and a moment neither have regretted, thanks in large part to Bethany Christian Services, the adoption agency that not only found a wonderful home for their daughter, but also helped the both of them through the struggles of dealing with the inevitable emotional trauma of giving a child up for adoption.

Now Catelynn and Tyler are helping to repay the debt they feel towards Bethany Christian Services by appearing in one of their commercials! Catelynn talks about how fearful she was in the initial stages of the adoption process and how Bethany Christian Services works with the birth mothers closely to help guide them through the decision making process and then the adoption, if that’s what the mother decides.

In the clip Catelynn and Tyler come in right around the 44-second mark and finish up right around 1:10.

Pregnancy counselor Dawn Baker, who you might recognize from 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom because she was the one who helped Catelynn and Tyler, says that they try to remain neutral in the decision making process and try to help the mothers make the best possible decision for their particular situation. For example, the first thing they do is help the mother put together an adoption pros and cons list. I can only imagine how small the pros list must have looked to Catelynn and Tyler when they completed it!

Another interesting take is that one of the adoptive parents points out how important it was to them that the birth mother was counseled well – which makes all the sense in the world, especially in an open adoption situation in which the birth mother will be seeing the child on occasion.

UPDATE - Here’s another clip featuring just Catelynn and Tyler promoting Bethany and IMPregnant.org:

From the site:

“In 2009, MTV Networks launched a ground-breaking show, 16 & Pregnant, that became a bigger hit than anyone imagined. Bethany Christian Services was contacted by the network because they were hoping to feature an adoption story on this new show. Months later Catelynn and Tyler debuted on the show and as they say, the rest is history.”

I thought no one knew the last name?

      • em

I think Ty and Cate know, they just have to say they dont for the privacy of B&T…but thats just what I think, I dont think in the beginning they knew. And whether they do or dont know, I’m sure Dawn knows.

Courtney – you are correct! Apparently Davis was a name they used at some point but isn’t their actual last name. The post has been edited. Thanks!

i’m sure catelynn would ask you to change the “gave up their daughter” to “placed their daughter for adoption.
      that’s a huge deal to them. :)
      love these two so much!!

        Done – and great point!

I LOVE C + T and Dawn but I am deeply suspicious of the motives of Bethany Christian Services being on this show. MTV has provided them with a great PR platform to combat their horrible reputation as an adoption provider. I sincerely hope that this marketing campaign of theirs is going hand in hand with serious reform of their practices as an agency but I am not holding my breath. While Caitlin and Tyler have received everything as promised, many birth mothers and fathers have been tricked, coerced, lied to, shamed and abandoned by this company.

That link has some reviews both from birth parents AND adoptive families outraged on behalf of their birth parents of their adopted children. I for one, if I adopted a child, would not want their birth parents treated this way no matter what the circumstances were. There is a lot more dirty laundry all over the internet from this company if you even begin to look.

I support adoption 100% for anyone who chooses it but BE CAREFUL dealing with Bethany Christian Services.

WOW Astrid, the link you posted really opened my eyes! I’m relieved Catelynn & Tyler had a positive experience, b/c they seem like genuinely good people, but it sounds like theirs was the exception rather than the rule.

I can’t imagine how hard it must be to put one’s child up for adoption. Birth parents and adoptive parents deserve so much better than this.

Wow, it’s amazing how something can seem so genuine and honest when you’re only able to see one side of the story. I didn’t even think twice about this Bethany adoption service before reading that. Obviously they helped Cate and Ty out in depth because they knew the cameras were rolling and that everything would be documented. That’s just awful. If the information on that link is correct then those working for Bethany adoption services (especially Dawn!) should be ashamed of themselves.

Everyone’s situation is different, since you hate your birth family maybe it’s good they gave you up so you can be with a family you love! Blood doesn’t mean family, love does!
