Three 6 Mafia’s DJ Paul arrested for allegedly packing… A taser!?!

DJ Paul of the Oscar winning rap group Three 6 Mafia was arrested last night in New York City on a weapon charge. While it doesn’t seem all that surprising that a rapper would get arrested for carrying a weapon, Paul’s weapon of choice was a bit out of the norm.

According to TMZ, the rapper was taken into custody after he came out of a bar with an open beer. After the police confronted him about his open container, they also noticed that Paul had something bulging out of his pants and no, he wasn’t just happy to see them. He was carrying a taser which is illegal to do without a permit.

Paul was booked and placed behind bars on charges of an open container and misdemeanor possession of a weapon. He was scheduled to face a judge this morning. So far, there’s been no word on how his court appearance went, but one report claimed that he would be released shortly after.

Earlier yesterday evening, Paul tweeted the hash-tag “Person Of Interest.” Was that foreshadowing?

Just two years ago, Paul’s half-brother Craig was arrested in Mexico. He had been hiding there since 2004 after fleeing the US when police found 600 pounds of marijuana inside one of his properties. At the time of his arrest in Mexico, police confiscated over a ton of marijuana and hundreds of kilos of cocaine. Craig was later indicted on over 50 charges including conspiracy to commit 6 murders, racketeering, and drug trafficking.

Craig makes Paul look like an angel.

In addition to his music career, Paul has also done a few reality shows. In 2007, he was appeared in Three 6 Mafia’s Adventures in Spring Break and Adventures in Hollywood. Then, in 2011, Paul was a featured contestant on Famous Food where he, along with former Real Housewives of New Jersey star Danielle Staub, won a partnership in Lemon Basket, a restaurant in Los Angeles which unfortunately closed after just 5 months.

UPDATE: Paul has released the following statement to TMZ:

“I honestly didn’t know it was illegal. I thought it was at the same level as pepper spray. My bodyguard wasn’t around last night and I was by myself in NYC and anything can happen in the late hours down there. I have a clean record and don’t want to dirty it up for something minor like this … I wasn’t carrying it to go out and harm someone.”
