Today’s female pop stars are no strangers to pushing the envelope when it comes to wearing less and less clothing, with sewing thread thongs and electrical tape pasties often times turning album covers and stage performances into unfiltered female anatomy classes. So it’s kind of refreshing to see how Taylor Swift has single-handedly reset the bar for what a shocking state of undress is by nearly blowing up the internet with a photo of her belly button.
The 25-year-old singer has famously kept her bb under wraps, despite often times being photographed in swimwear and otherwise somewhat revealing outfits. The navel-gazing photo below was posted by Taylor on instagram yesterday and features herself as well as Haim members (and sisters) Danielle, Alana and Este Haim posing in two-piece bikinis while on a boat. The gals are currently on vacation in Hawaii and Taylor captioned the picture, “Greetings from Maui!”
Curiously, it almost appears as though Taylor has swapped swimsuits with Alan Haim (left) who is wearing a high-wasted retro suit similar to the ones we’re all used to seeing Taylor wear. But before I spark any sort of Photoshopped body swapping rumors, Taylor was seen wearing the same bikini in another photo shared by the band, although her belly button is not visible:
Taylor talked about her elusive belly button in an interview with Lucky magazine in December:
“I don’t like showing my belly button. When you start showing your belly button then you’re really committing to the midriff thing. I only partially commit to the midriff thing—you’re only seeing lower rib cage. I don’t want people to know if I have one or not.” She laughs. “I want that to be a mystery. As far as anyone knows based on my public appearances, they haven’t seen evidence of a belly button. It could be pierced. They have no idea. If I’m going to get some sort of massive tattoo, it’s going to be right next to my belly button because no one’s ever going to see that.”
Soon after sharing the 50 Shades of Tay belly button photo, Taylor reverted to her more conservative ways and poked a little fun of her infamous affection for retro styled swimsuits:

All joking aside, I’d like to thank Taylor for making belly buttons sexy again! Now I’m afraid that the next time I’m at the grocery store and I see a woman wearing a short top I’ll have to refrain from confronting her and saying, “Damn! Put some clothes on! There are children in this store and you’re walking around here with your belly boo hoo hanging out!” (OK, I guess that wasn’t ALL joking aside.)
