Shawn Custis arrested in NJ nanny cam home invasion burglary
Just days after nanny cam video footage of a violent Millburn, New Jersey home invasion went viral authorities have arrested 42-year-old Shawn Custis in connection with the crime. Custis faces charges of attempted murder, robbery, burglary and child endangerment. The arrest was made Friday in Manhattan by the prosecutor’s office and the FBI just hours after authorities released a mug shot photo of Custis (below) from a previous burglary arrest.
Here’s a video report on Custis’ arrest from NBC 4 in New York:
In the original clip (you can see it here), the burglar can be seen punching, kicking, choking, and eventually throwing an unarmed woman down a flight of stairs — all while the woman’s three-year-old daughter watches silently while sitting on the couch. The mother later revealed that she realized keeping quiet was the best thing for the safety of her daughter. “I knew that if I started screaming, my daughter would too, and I was afraid she would get hurt,” she said. “I took it. I didn’t cry the entire time.”
The husband of the woman brutally beaten in the video told WPIX TV, “We are forever grateful to the incredible team of law enforcement officers for their hard work over the past week. Thanks to these heroes, our family can now begin the next chapter of our healing. We also want to thank everyone in the Millburn community, the Millburn Workmoms, and those from across the country for the outpouring of support.”
Custis is reportedly being held on $750,000 bail at the Essex County jail and is expected to be arraigned next week. According to online records, he has four prior burglary arrests in four different counties. His latest release from prison came just over six months ago.
