“You lick it, you buy it” is pretty common knowledge, right? Apparently, though, it’s for Ariana Grande and her new boyfriend. The pair were filmed licking doughnuts at a Los Angeles-area shop and then leaving them behind.
Now, the Los Angeles Times reports the owner took the surveillance video to police to demonstrate the doughnuts were intentionally tampered with–but that backfired a bit when the police determined Ariana didn’t commit a crime. Instead, the Riverside County’s Department of Environmental Health is investigating the store for leaving the baked goods within easy access of unattended customers.
Even though Ariana isn’t under investigation, she is getting some serious backlash in the court of public opinion — not only for licking the doughnut, but then for saying, “What the f*ck is that? I hate Americans. I hate America.”
After the video was released, she addressed it in a statement:
I am extremely proud to be an American and I’ve always made it clear that I love my country. What I said in a private moment with my friend Ryann, who was buying the donuts, was taken out of context and I am sorry for not using more discretion with my choice of words.
As an advocate for healthy eating, food is very important to me and I sometimes get upset by how freely we as Americans eat and consume things without giving any thought to the consequences that it has on our health and society as a whole. The fact that the United States has the highest child obesity rate in the world frustrates me… However I should have known better in how I expressed myself; and with my new responsibility to others as a public figure I will strive to be better.
The halfhearted apology isn’t appeasing many people, with some pointing out she was the one who entered a doughnut shop. After the video was released, Ariana also canceled her appearance at the Major League Baseball’s All-Star concert. She said she had to drop out because she had wisdom teeth removed on Monday, but 92 percent of TMZ voters think it’s really because of the video.
