Ariana Grande honors her mom and grandmother during VMA performance of ‘God is a Woman’

Ariana Grande’s hit song “God is a Woman” celebrates femininity and sexuality, but the pop star decided to extend the meaning even farther by brining her mom Joan and grandmother Marjorie Grande on stage at the end of her live performance Monday night at the 2018 VMAs.

The song started out with a kind of Last Supper vibe with Ariana sitting at the Jesus seat in the middle of a long row of women. This 15th-century religious painting by Leonardo da Vinci is often referenced in pop culture, and it certainly fits here with the “God” them.

Ariana and her backup dancers then get in another formation that probably references another Renaissance period painting.

The ending highlighted a very sweet moment as Ariana Grande brought out the women in her family to celebrate her female-empowered song.

Ariana and her new fiancé Pete Davidson also made their red carpet debut together for the first time since their whirlwind engagement. Pete has recently said that he knew he wanted to marry Ariana since they met during one of her visits to SNL three years ago. Ariana has said that she “willed” Pete into her life, so for these two dreams maybe do come true.
