Lisbeth Salander The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo earrings

For the film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo actress Rooney Mara transforms herself into tech-savvy Goth badass Lisbeth Salander, perhaps the best female action (super?) hero of the last 20 years. Her transformation includes a complete punk-inspired makeover with bleached eyebrows, multiple facial piercings, jet black hair, and the most hyperbole-deserving set of intimidating black earrings to ever hit the big screen!

Some might make the argument that behind Mara’s mesmerizing, vicious-when-provoked Salander character and Daniel Craig’s stoic, integrity-oozing Mikael Blomkvist, this pair of menacing tribal horn ear bling is the star of the show! There are numerous moments in the movie when director David Fincher seems to agree as the camera begins focused on them before panning out to tell the bigger story.

Here is a montage from various sources including promotional photos and the high-def trailers:

So where can you buy a pair of Lisbeth Salander earrings? Sadly, there doesn’t appear to be a clear answer to that question.

Rooney Mara posed as Lisbeth Salander on the cover of the February 2011 issue of W magazine and the earrings she wore are credited to Tawapa, an organic jeweler based in San Francisco. Here’s the cover photo without the text – you can click the photo to enlarge it:

If you look closely, you will notice they are not the same as the ones Rooney wears in the actual film. They aren’t a smoothly rounded spiral and they don’t have the three prongs that Lisbeth’s have. Browsing through the Tawapa web site it appears as though she is wearing a slight variation of what they call a “Jedi” design, as you can see here:

Plus, most all of Tawapa’s ear jewelry are stretchers, or “gauges,” which require rather large holes in your ears. Although Rooney Mara has been open about all of the piercings she did have (including her eyebrow, lips and nipple), she hasn’t mentioned having large holes put in her ears for the role, which would be a rather difficult thing to hide on the red carpet shortly after filming. So, that means she probably went with a pair of “faux” gauges like these from PrimalOriginals on etsy – which actually look more like the ones on the W cover than the those from Tawapa:

The problem with trying to match up with Lisbeth’s earrings exactly is that everything I could find was either completely smooth (like the ones above) or more ornate, like these from etsy seller TribalStyle:

H & M does have an affordable clothing line inspired by Lisbeth Salander (more on that here,) and they also carry a version of the earrings.

Here’s a photo of those:

Perhaps we can find an exact replica somewhere, but in the meantime we can all get to bleaching our eyebrows and trimming our bangs right away!
