VIDEO Johnny Depp jams “The Beautiful People” onstage with Marilyn Manson
Johnny Depp, occasional actor and musician, is well-known for getting onstage or in the studio and plucking away with assorted music makers. In this life (and possibly previous ones) he’s played with Oasis; he’s guitared it up with Aerosmith’s Joe Perry; he played acoustic guitar in his film Chocolat. He’s even been in a band with a member of the Butthole Surfers–not something that just anyone can lay claim to.
He’s also performed life with semi-noteworthy shock rocker Marilyn Manson, whose 1996 hit “The Beautiful People” remains his biggest and longest-lasting. This past weekend, for Halloween, Depp and Manson (real name Brian Hugh Warner) decided to get together onstage at The Roxy in Los Angeles–just a couple of blocks away from where Depp used to own a club–and rock it out one more time.
The resulting concoction is…interesting. Check it out, if you dare. But a word to the wise: The video features language more salty than sweet. It’s not exactly safe for work, is the takeaway from that.
Probably the most interesting thing coming out of this guest spot is Depp getting more applause than the performance of Manson’s biggest hit. It’s a bit of a mixed message, too: a song that lampoons celebrity culture, being performed by one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, by a guy who can no longer fill the arenas and theaters of his heyday.
There is some more cultural criticism there, for sure. Until that happens, though: Happy late Halloween, everyone! Pirates 5 is out in three years.
