Grumpy Cat inks movie deal, probably doesn’t care
Grumpy Cat’s takeover of all media platforms has continued as Deadline is reporting that the cranky-countenanced kitty has lined up a movie deal. That’s right, the most decorated cat in internet history could very well be coming to a big screen near you in the future, even though she probably doesn’t care.
Before you go all Grumpy Cat on the news that Grumpy Cat is going Hollywood, let’s get a breakdown of some of the sourpuss-star’s numerous accolades.
Grumpy, real name Tardar Sauce, was selected the most popular celebrity at this year’s SXSW, won Meme of the Year during the 2013 Webby Awards, was chosen as the most influential cat of 2012 by MSNBC and has appeared on shows including Today, Good Morning America, CBS Evening News, Anderson Cooper Live, VH1 Morning Buzz and The Soup.
G.C. has over 900,00 pout-devout followers on Facebook and is followed by over 120,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel – which has received over 20 million views. In summary, The Grumpster has what it takes to be a film star, at least that’s what the folks who signed the cat up are hoping.
Via Deadline:
Broken Road’s Todd Garner and Sean Robins, and Grumpy Cat’s reps (manager Ben Lashes and rep Al Hassas) have teamed up to produce and assemble a package for a Garfield-like feature film with the famous frowning feline at the center.
Dude, the cat has a manager AND a rep? Garner said of the deal:
“This started off as a picture of a cat, but rare is an image that evokes that much comedy. You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next. We think we can build a big family comedy around this character.”
At this point I wouldn’t bet against the power and popularity of Grumpy Cat.
