It’s a happy day for Slayer and cat fans, but a sad one for fans of pop rock mainstays Green Day.

Their lead guitarist Jason White, who joined the band full-time in 2012 after working with them since the late 90s, has been diagnosed with cancer of the tonsils.

The band notified its fans in a press release, which read:

We have some news to report regarding our brother Jason White, and wanted you to hear it from us before word spread. Jason recently underwent a routine tonsillectomy, and his doctors discovered a treatable form of tonsil cancer. Thankfully they caught it early and he should make a full and speedy recovery.

The statement concluded, “Please join us in sending him love and positive healing vibes during this time.”

There aren’t yet details about the specificity of White’s cancer, or about his treatment plan.

Fortunately for White, the band, and fans of the band, Green Day has no new material forthcoming, nor any booked tour dates.

Indeed, it was late last year that the wrapped a massive world tour in support of Uno, Dos, and Tré, its trio of themed albums. And it was during the lengthy tour in their support that White joined Green Day full-time.

The band’s Facebook page is awash with well-wishes. You can go there to leave some of your own.
