Garth Brooks cancels Today show appearance over Ferguson unrest
Pop music icon Garth Brooks, whose Man Against Machine world tour continues to sell out arenas like nobody’s business, has decided to cancel a scheduled Thanksgiving performance on the Today show.
The reason? Brooks has said he feels uncomfortable playing such a venue on such a day while protests rage nationwide over the grand jury’s decision to refrain from an indictment in Ferguson, Missouri.
Specifically, Brooks said that promotion “seemed distasteful.” He has been replaced by Whoopi Goldberg and Tom Colicchio.
The performer shared his reasoning on his Facebook page:
We landed in NY last night to the news of the civil unrest that was going on in our nation. To spend the day promoting our stuff like nothing was wrong, seemed distasteful to me. I will gladly reschedule any or all appearances the networks will allow. Love one another, g
Interestingly enough, Brooks’ first post-Thanksgiving tour dates are in St. Louis. It should be interesting to see if he makes any sort of on-stage comment regarding the verdict.
Brooks currently has dates booked in St. Louis, Little Rock, Tulsa, and Boston. There are plenty more on the way–though it’s worth pointing out that, to the disappointment of many, he has yet to confirm any of the rumors surrounding the return of popular alter ego Chris Gaines.
Maybe 2015 will bring the news CG fans have been clamoring for.
