Australian McDonald’s plays opera music to keep away disruptive teens

An Australian McDonald’s has a found anecdote to teenage loitering: opera music. LOUD opera music.

Manager told the Macarthur Chronicle newspaper: “We’ve noticed a reduction in the number of young people hanging around, but we’ll have to reassess it properly in a couple of weeks. We play a range of classical and opera music and so far it seems to be working.”

Some nearby business owners have also noticed a decreased amount of teenagers hanging around the parking lots, but others are annoyed because the music gets cranked up really loud when there are teens around. Other citizens think this practice could bring some “culture” to their community.

The McDonald’s managers actually got this idea from a 2009 experiment in the same town. Back then a shopping center blasted Barry Manilow on late night shopping Tuesday to keep the young people away.

Is this a valid option for businesses, or does it disrupt public areas?
