“I tried to bring Nashville here for the night,” Miley Cyrus tells the audience during her MTV Unplugged performance, and she brought it with red gingham, glammed-out ab-baring, a Nashville worthy wig, a country twang, and, of course, horse twerking.
And it definitely worked, honestly, because she has the pipes to back up all the weird. Everything about this Unplugged performance shows that Miley has mad respect for Dolly Parton, who just happens to be her godmother/aunt. I mean, this is the girl who killed Dolly’s heartbreak anthem “Jolene” before she went on a rampage to take over the pop scene (she also performs “Jolene” on “Unplugged.”)
“I don’t think people really realize yet what a great singer and writer she really is,” Dolly told the London Evening Standard, defending her goddaughter about the post-VMA twerking backlash. “She’s just trying to find her own place and wings and learn to fly.”
