Although he gained some recognition for appearing on Master of the Mix, DJ Brian Dawe admitted it was nothing compared to the coverage he received when tabloids uncovered his relationship with Teen Mom‘s Farrah Abraham.
“I mean, I didn’t know when it would come out, or if it would, so it kind of caught me by surprise,” Brian told Orlando Weekly, explaining he and Farrah quietly dated for a few months before the news broke. “But I knew it was a big ordeal when people started calling my mom’s house asking about it.”
After Brian and Farrah’s relationship was revealed, multiple sites (including this one) rushed to figure out more about the DJ: All these publications reported on Brian’s career. Some mentioned his struggle with testicular cancer. A few others even dug up “dirt” on his multiple traffic violations… Brian was less than thrilled with coverage of the third point, but told Orlando Weekly it has given him a better understanding of Farrah’s experiences.
“I think a lot of people give her a bad rap. She might not have the best reputation in the media right now, but I think she’s improved herself a lot, and she’s fixed a lot of the past mistakes she made. She’s young, she’s made some mistakes, just like everybody.”
Brian also said MTV and Teen Mom production company Viacom should share the responsibility of helping the young reality stars transition into more stable careers — especially since the businesses are profiting so much from the Teen Mom franchise.
“Even though I’ve been on reality TV before, I think the culture of reality television, especially with younger people, is very damaging,” Brian explained. “The fact that MTV and Viacom exploit 16-year-old girls – it’s clear they don’t care about the long-term or the mental health of these people, and it’s a travesty that they are willing to sacrifice integrity for entertainment.”
He continued to say he takes issue with any person getting thrust into the limelight at a young age.
“That’s something that they have to deal with for the rest of their lives. You look at a lot of young people put into the spotlight at a very young age, from Miley Cyrus to Britney Spears to even Justin Bieber, and they act out and they have to deal with this. There’s just this culture of exploiting young people. And it needs to change.”
I don’t know about you, but I was nearly convinced by Brian’s thoughtful argument… Then I saw a picture from Farrah’s early Halloween celebration.
