Ben Affleck named next Batman, Internet isn’t pleased

Ben Affleck Man of Steel Sequel

Warner Bros. announced on Thursday night that Ben Affleck will star as Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, which is set to premiere in July 2015. Even though Ben is an accomplished actor and director, most fans of the superhero series seem to disapprove of the casting choice.

Shortly after the Academy Award-winning director was named the next Bruce Wayne, a petition popped up on Change.org encouraging Time Warner’s Warner Bros. to remove the actor from the film.

“His acting skill is not even close to being believable as Bruce Wayne and he won’t do the role justice. He’s not built, nor is he intimidating enough for the role of Batman,” petitioner John Roden wrote. “His portrayal of Daredevil was atrocious and he’s not remotely close to an action star. Please find someone else.”

The petition has already earned 2,000 signatures.

The hashtag #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck also began trending on Twitter. Some of the best suggestions included Chumlee from Pawn Stars, PeeWee Herman and Pink. Javi Marroquin, Kailyn Lowry’s husband, got in on the fun by sharing a picture of their dog. The Despicable Me Twitter account for minions even shared a photo with their suggestion…

We voted and decided Teen Mom alum Tyler Baltierra would be a #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck. He’s a huge fan of the comic and already has an appropriate tattoo. Catelynn Lowell could even mix it up as Robin… She would certain make a #BetterRobinThanMattDamon!

Even though the public opinion seems to be firmly in the anti-Batfleck camp, a few others have come to Ben’s defense, saying he is a talented actor and the director clearly knew what he was doing.

Most significantly, director Zack Snyder said the accomplished actor will provide an “interesting counter-balance to Henry Cavill’s Superman.

“(Affleck) has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne… I can’t wait to work with him.”

Are you happy with the casting choice? If not, who would be a #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck?
