Warren Beatty and Annette Benning’s transgender son Stephen Ira Beatty does GLAAD healthcare PSA
Stephen Ira Beatty (born Kathlyn Elizabeth Beatty,) the transgendered son of Warren Beatty and Annette Benning, is speaking out for a cause close to his heart: Healthcare coverage for transgendered people in New York.
“I grew up outside of New York but I’ve always known I wanted to move here for the city’s vibrant artistic community,” Stephen says in the video. “As a trans person I would hope that I’d be welcomed but many trans people aren’t because we don’t have the basic healthcare courage we need to survive.” He’s referencing a New York State Medicaid regulation that excludes transgender people from accessing healthcare.
This isn’t the first time that 21-year-old Stephen has made a video about transgender issues for the public. Last year he uploaded a video for WeHappyTrans where he said “I identify as a trans man, a faggy queen, a homosexual, a queer, a nerd fighter, a writer, an artist and a guy who needs a haircut.”
In the video he thanked his role models and friends who have supported him since he began transitioning at age 14, but he didn’t mention his famous parents.
“It’s rare that my gender is misread [now that I’ve transitioned] based on my fem presentation, which I really appreciate,” he said about his gender identify. “I wear like lots of necklaces and rings and ribbons around my neck and things like that. And that’s totally a privilege, being on hormones and being perceived, being read that way – as male, even though I’m presenting in a fem way. It’s totally a privilege. It’s nice to finally have my identity be legible to people.”
