VIDEO Katy Perry’s emotional surprise for Pulse survivor
Tony Marrero was shot four times in the back and once in the arm during the horrific massacre at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
He appeared on yesterday’s episode of Ellen and talked about how much Katy Perry’s song “Rise” inspired him during his recovery process.
“The lyrics to that song are so powerful. Every word to that song is just powerful. So I embrace that and my boyfriend is annoyed already by that song. I play it and play it and play it because it is so beautiful,” he said.
In true Ellen fashion, the host plaintively asked, “Have you met Katy yet? You wanna meet Katy?” And sure enough, Katy Perry walked out from behind stage curtains unsuccessfully trying to hold back tears as Tony stood to welcome and embrace her.
Marrero: “I just want to say thank you for everything that you do. Your lyrics to that song helped me from the day I was in the hospital all the way to now. You’re amazing.”
Perry: “We’re both lights. I’m happy to be a joy, I’m happy to be a light and happy I could be there in my own little way to help you. “
Katy then let Tony know that she was personally going to pay for his first year of film school.
If you’ve got a little extra time, it’s worth it to get Tony’s full story as shared with Ellen in the following extended interview:
