REPORT Gilligan’s Island movie in the works with Josh Gad in lead role
It’s been nearly 50 years since the show premiered, but it seems we’re still stuck on Gilligan’s Island!
According to Deadline, producers hope to tap into the public’s nostalgic feelings toward the show by creating a feature film.
Warner Bros is charting a course for a feature film based on the series. It will be fashioned as a star vessel for Book Of Mormon‘s Josh Gad. Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez will write the script. Lloyd Schwartz, Ross Schwartz, Tracey Silvers and Cathy Silvers will be executive producers. They’re not saying what character Gad would play, but the title character seems a possibility, though he could conceivably play The Skipper.
Although there’s a lot can go wrong when a new generation decides to mess with a television classic (e.g. Bewitched), the film seems to be in the hands of producers who truly care about the quality: Lloyd and Ross Schwartz are the sons of Sherwood Schwartz, who created and produced the original series.
As the main character from the failed 1600 Penn, Josh Gad (inset in the top photo) has a less-than-stellar television track record at this point. However, as a star in the exceedingly popular Book of Mormon Broadway show, he certainly deserves a second chance at showcasing his talents.
Will you watch the Gilligan’s Island film? Who do you think should play the other characters?
