Ben Stiller dressed as a Na'vi alien from Avatar at the Oscars

Ben Stiller handed out the Oscar for Best Makeup Sunday night dressed as a Na’vi from James Cameron’s blockbuster sci-fi film Avatar. In addition to looking the part, Ben also spoke in the Na’vi language complete with growls and pops.

Joking that it would have been a lot simpler to don one of his pairs of autographed Leonard Spock ears to pay tribute to nominee Star Trek, but he decided that would be a bit too dorky. At one point during the presentation his tail began flailing about and he yanked on the transparent string attached to it revealing a fishing pole:

So who took home the golden statue for Best Makeup? I guess Stiller should have worn his Spock ears because Barney Burman, Mindy Hall and Joel Harlow of Star Trek took home top honors – the first in the history of the Star Trek franchise. Here’s Bena’vi handing off the unobtanium statuette to the winner:

For all you Trekkies out there, here is the acceptance speech given by Mindy with a brief interjection by Barney Burman:

Mindy Hall: I don’t want to step on your tail. It’s hard to follow that face. We thank you, the Academy. We thank J.J. Abrams, your vision inspired us, your energy kept us going and your insistence on perfection brought us here. We thank Bad Robot, Paramount Pictures, we felt your support every day.

We had an amazing staff of artists, over 40. We share this with you and we’ll be giving your names backstage at that backstage Thank You Cam. Thank you very much.

Barney Burman: Happy anniversary, baby!
