Ohio bus driver survived shots to the chest because of Bible in his shirt pocket

Bible Bus Driver - Rickey Waggoner

An Ohio bus driver is lucky he didn’t ask for a Kindle last Christmas: Rickey Wagoner survived two point-blank shots to the chest when the bullets lodged inside a Bible in his shirt pocket.

The incident began on Monday morning when Rickey’s unoccupied bus broke down in Dayton, Ohio. When he got out to look into the problem, three armed men approached him. Dayton’s WHIO reports Rickey later told police he heard one of the young men say “if you want to be all the way in the club, you have to kill the polar bear.” Then someone shot Rickey three times — once in the hip and twice in the chest. Another man stabbed him in the arm.

Rickey told police he stabbed one of the assailants with an aluminum pen. The three then ran. The injured bus driver then called 911.

“I’ve been hit in the leg. My chest feels like I’ve been hit with a sledgehammer,” he told an emergency dispatcher in the recording.

Upon investigation, police were amazed to discover two of the bullets were lodged inside the New Testament Bible in Rickey’s breast pocket.

“There was obviously some kind of intervention involved in this incident because he probably should not be here,” said Sgt. Michael Pauley.

Rickey is recovering at a local hospital. His son said in a Facebook post, “Dad is doing good now and my family and I are just lucky he is still alive.”
