Jared Fogle statement: Acknowledges guilt, says he has a medical condition

Jared Fogle Court

After he was formally charged with multiple counts related to child pornography and paying for sex with minors, former Subway spokesperson Jared Fogle released a statement via his attorney.

“Jared Fogle is agreeing to plead guilty to the charges filed against him today. In doing so, Jared is accepting responsibility for what he has done. He is also volunteering to make restitution to those affected by his deplorable behavior,” attorney Jeremy Margolis said, according to WISH. He is referencing the total $1.4 million Jared must pay out to his 14 victims. “While Jared fully recognizes that such monetary contribution will not undo the harm he has caused, he is hopeful it will assist these individuals as they try to move forward with their lives.”

Jared’s lawyer said his client recognizes he needs “significant psychiatric medical treatment and counseling.” He said Jared is already working with a “world-renowned expert in sexual conditions in order to chart a course to recovery.”

After the charges against Jared were revealed this morning, his wife, Katie Fogle, said in a statement that she is filing for divorce.

Obviously, I am extremely shocked and disappointed by the recent developments involving Jared. I am in the process of seeking a dissolution of the marriage. My focus is exclusively on the well-being of my children. Neither I nor my family will have any further comment on the matter. I appreciate respect for my family’s privacy during this difficult time.

In his statement, Jared’s attorney said his client regrets hurting innocent and vulnerable people, including his family members. He said, “He has expressed remorse to me and to his loved ones, and will, when given the opportunity, express that remorse to this court and to the people he has harmed. His intent is to spend the rest of his life making amends.”

The “Subway guy” reportedly did not speak much during the court hearing, but appeared “somber.” He will be sentenced by a judge at a later date. He will face at least five years in prison, but prosecutors are asking for a 12-year term.
