INFOGRAPHIC Which states have the most pride? Hint: Texas doesn’t top the list!
A new Gallup national survey reveals which Americans are most proud of their state — and the results are likely to surprise: Montana and Alaska are tied at the top, followed by Utah, Wyoming and Texas.
The survey was conducted between June and December 2013. At least 600 adults from each state were interviewed. In the poll, more than 3-in-4 Montanans and Alaskans said their states are among the best in the country. Many of the other prideful people reside in low-population, high-country regions.
“Although it is difficult to discern what the causal relationship is between terrain and climate and positive attitudes, many of the top 10 states are mountainous with cold winters,” observed Gallup’s Justin McCarthy. “In fact, the two states most highly rated by their residents — Montana and Alaska — are among not only the nation’s coldest states but also both border Canada.”
Interestingly, Texas had the greatest percentage of respondents say their state is THE BEST (opposed to one of the best).
On the opposite end of the spectrum, only 18 percent on Rhode Island residents and 19 percent of Illinoisans would recommend their state to another person.
One in four people from Illinois went so far as to say their state is THE WORST. Gallup’s Justin McCarthy mused this may be because of political scandals and high taxes.
Here’s the complete breakdown from Gallup…
