Gwyneth Paltrow nabs “most hated celebrity” title over Anne Hathaway and Kristen Stewart
This year’s “most hated celebrity,” an annual list from Star, seemed like a close race.
There was Kristen Stewart, the star of the dragged-on-too-long Twilight series and a public affair. Last February, she was voted the least sexy female celebrity by a group of British men. She was also part of four winning (or losing) categories for Razzie Awards. Seemed safe to say she would score the trifecta.
But, wait! What about Anne Hathaway? She may be a great actress, but she fails at making convincingly humble award acceptance speeches. Her detractors even came together as a united group of “Hathahaters.” SF Gate even deemed her the most annoying celebrity, which isn’t a far cry from “most hated.”
However, The New York Times noted that Hathahaters may simply be displacing their frustrations with real-life “tall poppies.”
“Indeed, for some nonfans, Ms. Hathaway seems to embody the archetypal high school drama geek who cannot turn off the eager, girlish persona, even away from the stage,” Alex Williams wrote this month.
So then, the field was cleared for one celebrity who has been detested for the better part of the last decade: Gwyneth Paltrow.
Paltrow, the daughter of a famous director and movie star, is similar to Hathaway in her faux-humble ramblings. She earned an upper edge when she created her own hoighty-toighty lifestyle website, Goop. She also offers some pretty impractical tips in her latest cookbook.
Then there are the interviews she gives. Sure, there are a few relatable moments that show she is human. But, most of her comments are less than modest…
- “We have great dinner parties at which everyone sits around talking about politics, history, art and literature — all this peppered with really funny jokes. But back in America, I was at a party and a girl looked at me and said, ‘Oh, my God! Are those Juicy jeans that you’re wearing?’ and I thought, I can’t stay here. I have to get back to Europe.”
- “I don’t really have drunk friends. My friends are kind of adult; they have a drink. But they hold their liquor. I think it’s incredibly embarrassing when people are drunk. It just looks so ridiculous. I find it very degrading. I think, ooh, you’re really degrading yourself right now, to be this pissed out in public.”
- “I like living here because I don’t fit into the bad side of American psychology. The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans.”
Even though she knows about her reputation, Paltrow seems to have a bad case of word vomit. She starts saying something ridiculous and just can’t stop herself.
In one of her most recent interviews with Harper’s Bazaar, she threw out random comments about her family’s relationship with the Carters. As in Jay-Z and Beyonce.
“It’s very liberating. It’s very empowering, and I’ve learned a lot of that from Jay — Shawn Carter — Z, because his approach to life is very internal. It’s a very good lesson to learn.”
Also on the list of the 20 most hated celebrities: Chris Brown, Jesse James, Taylor Swift, Shia LaBeouf, Lindsay Lohan, Angelina Jolie, Jay Leno, Ashton Kutcher, LeAnn Rimes, Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Justin Bieber, Madonna, Matt Lauer, Katherine Heigl, John Mayer and Jennifer Lopez.
