Free Willy’s August Schellenberg dead at 77

August Schellenberg Died
August Schellenberg, who played mentor Randolph Johnson in the first three Free Willy movies, has died at the age of 77. According to TMZ, August had a long battle with cancer.

August was born in Canada to Métis and Swiss-German parents and often played Native characters. Although August was best known for his role in the Free Willy series, he was an accomplished actor who won an Emmy for his 2007 portrayal of Chief Sitting Bull in Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Coincidentally, his final film appearance was in 2012’s The Last Movie.

Still, most of us will remember him as Randolph, who helped guide Jesse as he worked to save the killer whale from the aquarium owners who planned to kill it. Relive the childhood favorite with this trailer…

August is survived by his wife and three daughters.
