Couple rushes wedding so dying 2-year-old son can be best man
On Saturday, Sean Stevenson and Christine Swidorsky of Jeannette, Pennsylvania were joined in holy matrimony. They had put off this day for 2 years as their 2-year-old son Logan battled cancer, but when they got the horrible prognosis that their boy only had weeks to live they rushed their plans so that he could be the best man in the ceremony.
Christine told KDKA:
“This is our dream come true, all our family together, and we’re all together celebrating. A celebration of my son’s life and a celebration of our marriage.”
Shortly after Logan’s 1st birthday Christine noticed that Logan wasn’t feeling well and that his lips and fingernails had turned white. Over the next month, she took her son to the doctor 4 times before the head pediatrician evaluated Logan and called 911 immediately.
It was discovered that Logan had leukemia that had progressed so far, they were surprised that he was still alive. They began intensive chemotherapy treatment and the process took a heavy toll on the child’s body. Logan fought hard and by 2013 his doctors were ready to give him a stem cell transplant.
Following the transplant, Logan was leukemia free for 9 months and the family became hopeful that the child might persevere. Tragically, cancer returned again, this time in the form of a tumor the size of an orange on one of his kidneys. The doctors were given no choice but to remove the kidney.
After this, Logan once again rallied and regained a healthy appetite giving the family yet another glimmer of hope that they might beat the horrible disease. But then he regressed and started getting fevers and became nauseous — the doctors found that the tumor had returned where the removed kidney used to be. It was at this point that the medical experts informed Sean and Christine that any more attempts at treatment would just do more harm than good and that Logan’s days were limited. On July 26, they gave him one to two weeks to live.
Through the impossibly cruel ups and downs of their battle, the couple had planned a wedding for next year but changed the date with Logan’s diagnosis. They hurriedly put together a backyard wedding, with donations and assistance from the community, so that Logan could be a part of memories and a ceremony that would live with the couple forever. Sean said, “Under the circumstances of what the doctors told us, we just decided to go ahead and do it while he was still with us.” “I’m speechless, and I’m touched by everybody’s prayers and love out there,” Christine added.
Post Note – A family spokeswoman confirmed with the AP on Tuesday that little Logan passed away Monday evening. Christine said on Facebook, “He is with angels and he’s in no more pain.”
