College students discovered the ‘ghost’ haunting their house was really some guy living in a secret room
Some roommates from Ohio State University thought their house was haunted by a ghost, but the truth turned out to be even creepier: A complete stranger was living in a secret basement room!
“We had been telling everybody the story about the ghost that lives in our house, coming and opening all our cupboards and our oven,” Mark Harman told the Ohio State Student Newspaper, The Lantern.
Mark and his 14 other male roommates also noticed mysterious noises coming from behind a door in the basement, but they believed it was just a locked maintenance closet. It wasn’t until workers knocked down the door that they discovered the extra roommate was actually a living, breathing guy!
Apparently, the unaccounted resident was the cousin of a previous resident. He was able to use his cousin’s key to gain entrance to the house, even though the new roommates were told the landlord had changed the locks.
“I feel bad for him. It’s just, he wasn’t supposed to be living there,” said current resident Brett Mugglin. “It’s funny now, but it potentially could have been extremely dangerous given that some random guy had a key to our house and was just living in our house without anyone knowing.”
After the unwelcome houseguest was discovered, the residents served him an eviction notice. They later allowed him to come collect his belongings, which included a bed, framed photographs and textbooks.
Although the situation was resolved easily enough, it did make the students question who else could have gained access to their house.
“They hadn’t changed the locks from the year before, and the keys don’t say ‘do not duplicate,'” one resident said of the landlords. “There could be hundreds of people with keys to the house.”
