In the first episode of A&E’s docu-series Born This Way, Megan Bomgaars explains that she’s a “very typical 22-year-old girl.” That’s a pretty humble self-evaluation for a young woman who’s a sought after public speaker; a fashion model; a recipient of the 2008 National High School Spirit of Sport Award; an entrepreneur; and the star of a viral video that has helped spread awareness and the message of inclusion to hundreds of thousands of people.
Megan, who has Down syndrome, composed and narrated a 2013 video for teachers. Its powerful message: “Don’t limit me!” She encourages educators to be inclusive and to not lower their expectations because of the challenges that she, or anyone else, may face.

Megan has taken full advantage of the opportunities her video afforded her. In addition to the accolades already listed, Bomgaars delivered a keynote presentation at the National Down Syndrome Congress Convention, and was honored at The White House during Michelle Obama’s 2015 Beating the Odds Summit.
And now Megan Bomgaars can check off the box for “Reality TV star”!
Born This Way, which premieres Tuesday, December 8 at 10/9c on A&E, “follows the lives of seven young adults born with Down syndrome as they pursue their passions and lifelong dreams, explore friendships and work, all while defying society’s expectations. The series also gives voice to the parents allowing them to talk about the joy their son or daughter brings to the family, and the challenges they face in helping them live as independently as possible.”
The parental perspective is a highlight of the show. For Megan, it’s all about her mom, Kris, who’s obviously her daughter’s biggest fan. Kris, who Megan lovingly calls her dream maker, says, “I’ve dedicated my life to my daughter. I made the choice for her to be here therefore it is my responsibility to make sure she has the best life she possibly can.”
The show joins Megan and Kris as they follow her dream of moving permanently to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film production.
Megan is not your typical 22-year-old, and it’s clear, after having screened the premiere, that Born This Way is not your typical reality TV show. It’s a well-produced, informative, and entertaining look at seven people with a fascinating story to share.
