Michael Phelps was arrested for driving under the influence early this morning in Baltimore.
According to Maryland Transportation Authority police, the Olympian was pulled over shortly before 2 a.m. for driving 84 miles per hour in a 45-mph zone and for crossing over double lane lines. Upon approaching the car, the officer noticed Michael appeared to be under the influence. The swimmer then failed to “perform satisfactorily” a series of field sobriety tests. TMZ Sports reports his blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit.
Michael, 29, was booked at a nearby station on the charges of driving under the influence, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines. He was released a short time later.
Before becoming the most decorated Olympian in history, Michael was busted for a DUI at the age of 19. In that case, he struck a deal to serve 18 months of probation.
UPDATE Michael just released the following three-part statement on Twitter…
“Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines. … I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. … I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down.”
