2 Broke Girls copycat recipe: How to make cake fries

Cake Fries - 2 Broke Girls

On tonight’s episode of 2 Broke Girls, Max and Caroline try to feed off New York City’s cronut craze with a food hybrid of their own: cake fries. Although the success of their venture remains to be seen by us viewers, I figured they were on to something and decided to give “cake fries” a shot in my personal test kitchen.

I’m not sure what Max and Caroline’s method was for their cake fries, so I may be entirely off with this “copycat recipe.” But, even if that’s the case, rest assured that these are super delicious — and probably way easier to make! (I actually feel slightly guilty calling it a recipe. This is more of a method. Oh well… potato-potatohhh.)

2 Broke Girls’ Cake Fries

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 1 frozen pound cake
  • 4 T oil, such as coconut or canola
  • 4 T powdered sugar
  • 4 T strawberry jelly

Instructions

Take the frozen pound cake out of the package and allow it to thaw slightly. Using a crinkle-cut knife, slice off the very ends of the cake. Then, working 1/4-in. at a time, slice the cake vertically.

Cake Fries 1

Cut each individual slice into four horizontal strips, forming a “crinkle-cut fry” look. Set aside.

Heat 1T of oil in a pan over medium heat. Once the pan is uniformly warm, place the “fries” in small batches.

Cake Fries 2

Cook on each of the four sides for 20-30 seconds, until lightly browned. Repeat the process with another batch of fries. You may need to add more oil as you go. (Rule of thumb: 1T oil per 1/4 cake.)

Place the cooked fries on a sheet and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Cake Fries 3

Serve warm with a side of strawberry jelly to complete the “ketchup and fries” vibe!

UPDATE The actual 2 Broke Girls recipe just called for regular fries and frosting for dipping… And here I was thinking this “recipe” was too simple! At least you’ve got a couple options, now!
