Why Matt Damon never denied rumors he and Ben Affleck dated
15 years ago childhood buddies Ben Affleck and Matt Damon won an Oscar for writing Good Will Hunting, and the pair seemed so close that the rumor mill was rife with speculation that they were boyfriends.
Matt Damon never denied the rumor, and now the 42-year-old actor is explaining why he refused to. It’s not because there was any truth to the rumors, it’s because at the time it wasn’t safe to be an out homosexual in Hollywood, and it would seem like an insult to his friends who really were gay to deny it.
I never denied those rumors because I was offended and didn’t want to offend my friends who were gay—as if being gay were some kind of f—-ng disease. It put me in a weird position in that sense. The whole thing was just gross. But look, there have been great signs of progress—the fact that Anderson Cooper and Ellen DeGeneres can come out so beautifully and powerfully, and it’s a big f—-ng deal that it turns out nobody gives a sh–. If Liberace were alive today, everybody would love his music and nobody would care what he did in his private life. Like with Elton John.
Matt is playing a gay man in Candelabra, a film about Liberace starring Michael Douglas.
