John Krasinksi is a "Hideous Man"

John Krasinski’s directorial and screenwriting debut, Brief Encounters with Hideous Men, comes out in limited release today (September 25, 2009). The film is based on a play by the late David Foster Wallace, which makes it an ambitious project from the start. Wallace’s writing is brilliant, rambling, prose that would be hard for anyone to translate to the screen, and must be especially harrowing for a novice filmmaker.

Krasinski has an intense emotional connection to the work because it was what inspired him to pursue acting. Reviews are mixed, and even those who enjoyed the film found some points that needed to be ironed out. The consensus seems to be that Hideous Men is still a play masquerading as a film. The subject matter can be jarring for some and Krasinski may have ultimately failed at bringing the spirit of the book to the screen, but a great many people still enjoyed watching it. That’s enough for me to give it a shot.
