In 2012 a back injury forced Sgt. Jason Bos to leave the Army. The departure was particularly hard on Bos at the time as he had to say goodbye to MWD Cila M389, in civilian terms, the bomb-sniffing chocolate Labrador he affectionately called Cici.

Bos and Cila forged a close bond as they spent over 5 years together as a team searching for hidden weapons and roadside bombs during their service in Iraq. Later, the two were tasked with screening sites for presidential visits at numerous locations across the United States.

When Bos exited Cila was only 5 and still had some quality work years ahead of her. Jason headed back home to Michigan while Cila continued doing her job – neither knowing if they would ever reunite again. But then…

A month ago Bos discovered via Facebook that Cila was up for retirement. The kennel master at the base then personally contacted Bos inquiring as to whether he would be interested in adopting Cila. Bos’ answer? “Yes. What do I have to do?”

Doing the necessary paperwork he was approved and with some assistance from the American Humane Society and Mission K9 Rescue, Cila was spotted the ticket for a flight from her old home in Germany to her new home back in the U.S. of A.

After a 9-hour flight, this was the touching scene as Bos and Cici reunited at Chicago’s O’Hare airport:

Bos told the Chicago Tribune, “Her whole life has been about working. Now it’s time for her to worry about just relaxing,” adding that taking Cici home “means everything to me.”
