VIDEO Street Outlaws’ Derek Travis crashes his Silver Unit Camaro

Street Outlaws Derek Silver Unit Camaro crash

Part of the reason that Discovery’s Street Outlaws reality series is so popular is because the “reality” is that this is a very dangerous sport. The latest driver to be involved in a frightening crash is Derek Travis, who wrecked his 1986 “Silver Unit” Camaro into the wall at the I-22 Motorsports Park located in Eldridge, Alabama this weekend.

Derek was matched up against Hunter Burgess and “The Super Ray” and Derek seemed to have handling issues from the get go as his Camaro headed into the wrong lane early before over-correcting and smashing into the wall. Here is a video of the crash:

The Silver Unit was reportedly totaled in the accident, but thankfully, it appears as though Derek was not seriously injured. “Derek was nothing more than a little sore and momentarily shaken up,” reports Speed Society, “but he did end up being alright.”

So far, Derek has remained quiet and has yet to update his fans on social media.

UPDATE – This was posted on the Silver unit Racing Facebook page Saturday night:

To all the fans asking:
Derek is ok he is sore but ok, Derek did total his car tonight at the track! Here is the video.

Any and all negative comments will be deleted and blocked. Thank you for your support at this point we are uncertain of damage.

UPDATE – Here’s another update from Derek two weeks after the crash, including photos of the Silver Unit after the crash as well as Derek’s plans moving forward.

Someone (I assume it was Derek himself) showed that The Silver Unit team had not lost its spunk when a commenter wrote “Don’t worry, Discovery will build you a promod!” The response was: “They won’t build me sh!t! They never have and never will.”

The match-up between Hunter Burgess and Derek Travis was a much-anticipated one, and even had its own promotional poster:

Just before the event, the image was shared by The Silver Unit Racing Facebook page along with the caption: “Who’s ready for some Memorial Day weekend bad boy heads up racing????? I know I’m ready to see what the Vetts got. Guess we will see if the 405 and 256 have enough.”

A couple of weeks prior to the event, Hunter was excitedly talking about the head-to-head match up on Facebook as well: “Big news!!! Derek in the ‘Silver Unit’ and I are match racing the 28th!!! Let’s see if this ol local boy can send him back to the 405 with his tail tucked!!! And everyone that wants a shot at him he will be running the big tire shootout!!!”

It appears as though the “ol local boy” was successful in his bid to send Derek back to the 405. Thankfully, Derek will be sent back in one piece. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for his car.

For those of you not familiar with Derek, here is a clip of him talking about race preparation from Street Outlaws followed by another video featuring Derek discussing the transition from a carburetor to electronic fuel injection:
