VIDEO PHOTOS Shia LaBeouf wears a paper bag, leaves press conference after sardines quote
Actor Shia LaBeouf continued his unpredictable public shenaniganry in Berlin earlier today where he was in attendance to “help” promote the premiere of Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac, Volume 1. In addition to arriving on the red carpet sporting a brown paper bag over his head with eyeholes cut out and his new slogan, “I AM NOT FAMOUS ANYMORE,” written in black letter across the front, Shia also attended a Q&A session with co-stars Christian Slater, Stacy Martin, Stellan Skarsgard, Uma Thurman and producer Louise Vesth during which he answered his first question with a quote about sardines before abruptly departing.
Here’s the clip — Shia’s special moment comes near the end:
The bizarre answer came about ten minutes into the panel discussion and was in response to someone asking about what it was like to star in a movie with so many sex scenes and whether or not he thought society was a bit hung up about sex in general. Shia’s co-star Stacy Martin was first to answer the question, as she earnestly explained that she trusted the director to not be gratuitous with the sex scenes, etc.
Then Shia, who looked a bit rough in a dirty ball cap, jacket, shaved tooth and NYPD hoodie, adjusted the microphone and said, “When the seagulls,” he then took a dramatic pause to drink some water, “follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.” He then adds, “Thank you very much,” and leaves.
The quote is actually yet another example of Shia’s infamous plageurismegery as it is a relatively famous quote from French soccer player turned actor Eric Cantona who similarly used the line to abruptly end a press conference after being sentenced to community service for assault after kung-fu kicking a fan during a soccer match in 1995.
It should also be noted that Shia’s paper bag stunt wasn’t anything new either as he previously made headlines waaaay back in 2009 when he sported one (sans the verbiage) while taking a walk to the liquor store.
