VIDEO Mo’Nique’s acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe

Mo'Nique wins Best Supporting Actress Drama Golden Globe

Mo’Nique won the Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture Golden Globe for her performance as Mary Lee Johnston in the movie Precious based on the novel Push by Sapphire. She gave a long, heartfelt acceptance speech in which she thanked God, her husband and director Lee Daniels among many others. It’s a wonderful, touching tribute that was the perfect kickoff for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Mo’Nique’s performance as the hard-as-nails mother of Gabourey Sidibe’s title character Precious was nothing short of terrifying. It wasn’t just her unpredictable violent outbursts and complete disregard for her children as human beings that made her character so frightening, it was the fact that her character was absolutely, 100% believable.

In my opinion it was Mo’Nique’s performance that allowed for everything else great in Precious, which doesn’t take anything away from the other actors, the director or the writers. The Precious character is completely paralyzed in all aspects of her life. In order for the audience to empathize we have to believe her bad situation is insurmountable, and that’s what Mo’Nique delivers. She is almost the inverse of hope, of love. In other words, congratulations MoNique – you were absolutely fantastic and deserved this award hands down!
