On Monday’s episode of The Late Show With David Letterman, Joaquin Phoenix announced he popped the question to his yoga instructor girlfriend after she helped him “harness the hog.”
“We started dating, and I think she’s the one. I proposed to her and she said yes,” he said to applause from the audience.
The thing is… It was all a joke cooked up by Joaquin.

On Tuesday’s Good Morning America, the former faux rapper said he felt like his life was boring and an engagement would be “exciting” to discuss with David Letterman. He added, “I wanted the audience to like me. They really like people getting married… I can get engaged again, if you like.”
The 40-year-old actor’s publicist also confirmed it was a hoax, telling the U.K.’s Independent, “Joaquin has an extraordinary and spontaneous sense of humor but it is not true.”
