Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez, known the world over for his biting and headbutting antics as he is for his brilliant play, is under official investigation by FIFA for allegedly biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during yesterday’s World Cup match.

Because FIFA has classified the incident has been classified as a “serious infringement,” Suárez faces a minimum ban of two matches. The maximum ban is two years.

The bite occurred during Tuesday’s match, which Uruguay won 1-0. In the 79th minute and with the score tied at zero, Suárez turned and bit Chiellini–who then turned to the referee, pulled his jersey down from his shoulder, and displayed the bite marks.

No foul was called on the play. In the ensuing protest, Uruguay won a corner kick, which they converted into the winning goal.

The loss eliminated the Italians from the World Cup. Because Uruguay’s next match is Saturday afternoon, FIFA has expedited its investigation; the formal hearing into Suárez’ behavior will take place this (Wednesday) afternoon at five PM Brasilia time.

Suárez was banned seven matches by the governing body of Dutch soccer after biting a player in 2010. Last year, England banned him ten matches for a second bite.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, European media have referred to Suárez as “The Cannibal.”

Here’s a YouTube mix of all three of Suárez’ bites, complete with a delightfully energetic soundtrack:
