VIDEO Here’s American hero Tim Howard scoring a wind-assisted 102-meter goal

Current U.S. national team keeper Tim Howard is winning accolades and the hearts of millions from sea to shining sea in light of his record-setting 16-save performance against Belgium on Tuesday.

What many people have forgotten, though, is that Howard is a dynamo on the offensive side of the field, as well.

On January 4, 2012, during his day job as the goalie for English club Everton, Howard laid into the ball to make a routine return. Except, then this happened:

It’s true that the prevalence of gale-force winds–and a little bit of luck–contributed just as much to the unlikely strike as did Howard’s massive boot.

But on this, America’s day of summer celebration, we should all take a moment to further and better appreciate our newest national treasure. And to remember that even if the petition to make Howard the Secretary of Defense comes up short, this goal is proof he could probably handle the role of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

General Martin Dempsey, consider yourself on notice.
