Are MythBusters’ Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman friends?
For years, there have been reports floating around that MythBusters Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman aren’t friends — and it’s one myth that can’t be busted!
“It is true that we’re not friends,” Adam told Entertainment Weekly in a new interview. But, he added, they do have mutual admiration. “We know as much or more about each other than even close friends do because we’ve been at the center of this show for the last 12 years. That, again, is informed by a deep amount of respect.”
When confronted with the same question in 2013, Adam explained in a bit more detail that they “tend to drive each other batty” and have never had dinner alone together in the 21 years they’ve known each other.
“Our very different personalities means that we spend a lot of time in sort of conflict. It’s not like we’re always like, ‘You’re an a**hole.’ ‘No, you’re an a**hole,'” Adam said, explaining they just disagree on how to go about projects. “Every single idea that one of us puts out will get tested and picked apart by the other one.”
At the very least, Jamie and Adam can agree on the nature of their relationship: Jamie described it almost identically in a 2013 interview with The Strait Times.
“In general, we don’t like spending time with each other because we are just such different people. We don’t spend any time together when we don’t have to,” he said. “If you’re working with somebody that you don’t like, you know that can be very unpleasant. But if you have a great respect for them, it can be a great asset. And we have a tremendous amount of respect and appreciation for each other, which means that any conflicts that you see us have on the show is actually very short-lived.”
The new season of MythBusters premieres on Discovery on Jan. 10.
