A married husband and wife in Brazil recently learned they are also half-brother and sister.
Adriana and Leandro (pseudonyms requested by the couple) explained to Rádio Globo they were both abandoned by their mothers at young ages. When they began dating, they realized their mothers shared the same name, Maria. They went on to marry seven years ago and have a healthy 6-year-old daughter.
Even though Adriana and Leandro told themselves their mothers’ shared name was a coincidence, Adriana said she couldn’t shake the thought that she may be related to her husband. Working with Angel of Meetings, Adriana finally tracked down her mother this spring.
With a radio host on the line to moderate, Adriana and Maria started their first conversation on a happy note. But, toward the end of the discussion, Adriana finally asked whether her mother had any other children. Maria said yes, she had a son named Leandro with a different man.
To clarify, the radio host asked Maria what Leandro’s last name would be. Her answer confirmed Adriana’s fears.
“I do not believe you’re telling me this. Leandro is my husband,” Adriana said, crying. “Now I’m scared to go home and find out that Leandro doesn’t want me anymore. I love him so much.”
A few days after the revelation, Adriana and Leandro said they discussed the situation and said they weren’t going to allow pesky genetics get in the way of their love.
“At first we were really knocked by it all, but we had a family meeting and told everyone that we are going to stay husband and wife, whatever anyone might think,” Adriana said. “We have so many plans together. Nothing is going to break us up. Nothing.”
They also don’t hold any grudges against their shared mother… In fact, they plan to meet for a family reunion in the near future.
