Joan Rivers says Lena Dunham’s sending the message to ‘stay fat’ and ‘die’

Joan Rivers - Lena Dunham

Although speaking specifically about Girls‘ Lena Dunham, perpetual word-vomitter Joan Rivers offended a whole lot of people during her chat with Howard Stern on Tuesday.

The conversation began in Joan’s territory of fashion assessment. She wondered aloud to Howard why Lena would select dresses that fall above the knees. Howard suggested it was because of the body acceptance movement Lena promotes — but Joan made it clear she doesn’t subscribe to that group’s newsletter.

“[Lena is] sending a message out to people saying it’s OK. Stay fat, get diabetes, everybody die, lose your fingers,” said Joan, who clearly discarded the idea of accepting her natural body many years ago. “If you look the way you look, Lena, and that’s fine and you’re funny, don’t say it’s okay that other girls can look like this. Try to look better.”

Doing the ultimate “no offense, but…” move, Joan said she’s a fan of Lena’s work.

“I love that she’s funny. I love that she did well,” Joan said. “But don’t let them laugh at you physically.”

Apparently not realizing the hypocrisy in that statement, Joan said she believes Lena’s recent Vogue cover — which involved minimal retouching — sent contradictory messages.

“Don’t go on Vogue‘s cover and — here we go again — going on Vogue‘s cover and looking gorgeous. I didn’t know it was her,” she said. “I’m on fire over hypocrisy.”

Joan is, of course, no stranger to controversy. Earlier this year, she called baby North West “ugly” and “in need of a waxing.” More recently, she mocked Kim Kardashian in a parody video with Ray J, which led to Khloe Kardashian reportedly canceling a Fashion Police appearance at the last minute.
