Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini were great, but Rocco is the true star of The Drop

The Drop, screenplay by David Lehane, features stellar performances by the late James Gandolfini, Noomi Rapace, and especially Tom Hardy, but the dog Rocco really stole the whole film. It’s also not often that you come away from a suspenseful movie that exposes the dark underbelly of human nature with an intense urge to adopt a rescue puppy.

Edie Falco spent years playing the wife of James Gandolfini’s defining character Tony Soprano. Last evening during the Emmys, the actress gave a heartfelt and emotional tribute to the man we all lost too soon.

“When you see really great art, you can sometimes forget that behind it is a person with technique and skill, for sure, but with an instinct, a perspective that is distinctly their own. One that moves people, pulls them in, makes them want to watch. James Gandolfini was one such individual.”

After hearing of the tragic passing of James Gandolfini, I got into a conversation with a friend about the historical impact of his association to the indelible role of Tony Soprano. We concluded that while there may be some on par, no actor has ever been more closely tied to such an iconic TV character as Gandolfini was to Tony Soprano. While Twitter exploded with condolences and shock at the news, perhaps the most affecting tribute that has surfaced since the 51-year-old’s sudden death is a photo posted by Holsten’s Brookdale Confectionery.
