Since splitting nearly 10 years ago, Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson have clearly both moved on with their lives: She is married to Eric Johnson and has two kids while he is expecting his second child with wife Vanessa Lachey. So, it’s no huge surprise that the exes haven’t really kept in touch.
“She and I don’t necessarily stay in each others lives,” Nick, 41, told Jenny McCarthy for her SiriusXM show Dirty, Sexy, Funny. “I wouldn’t say it’s friends and I wouldn’t say it’s enemies — there is just no contact. We both moved on with our lives… It’s not animosity, it’s not friendship, it’s just kind of nothing.”
Unlike in most split situations, Nick can’t escape all reminders of his ex-wife.
“I don’t rush right down to Macy’s and buy a bunch of clothes or shoes, but I also don’t hiss at the TV,” he said of his reactions to seeing one of Jessica’s commercials. “It’s somewhere in the middle.”
Although he has to deal with his ex-wife randomly appearing when he’s trying to watch shows, Nick said he doesn’t really have cause to think of her that often. He added he’s very thankful there weren’t other complicating factors when they separated.
“In our situation, that was probably the best thing that could have ever happened that we didn’t have kids,” Nick said. “And look, you’re always going to love your kids no matter how you feel about their other parent, but all things being equal, it was the best thing probably for both of us that we went on with our lives. She’s obviously happily married with two and I’m happily married and about to have two so it all worked out the way it was kind of meant to work out.”
