It seems that Jada Pinkett Smith has taken a cue from her infamously wild-haired child Willow Smith as the 42-year-old actress showed off her new partially shaved hair style on the red carpet at Equality Now’s “Make Equality Reality” event in Los Angeles Monday night!
The new look features shaved (and bleached blonde) hair on the side with Jada’s famous long locks on top — almost in a mohawk style. She first showed off the look in a Facebook photo posted at the end of September, and was photographed by the paparazzi sporting the ‘do while arriving at LAX in early October, but this is the new hairstyle’s official red carpet debut.

Although Jada’s new hairstyle garnered the headline for this post, let’s not forget that the real story here is the event itself and the work of Equality Now. In case you’re not familiar with the organization, here’s a summary of their mission statement from the Equality Now Facebook page:
Equality Now works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world. Our main program areas of work are: Discrimination in Law, Sexual Violence, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and Trafficking.

Last night’s gathering was the first annual “Make Equality Reality” event honoring “award-winning writer, director, producer and Advisory Board member, Joss Whedon, for his work on gender equality,” according to the press release. “Chaired by Board member Gloria Steinem and hosted by Paul Reiser, #MakeEqualityReality will be an intimate evening of music, film and theater with special guests, including Jada Pinkett Smith and Alyson Hannigan, and featuring a live performance by two-time Grammy winning singer songwriter Colbie Caillat. The evening is made possible through the generous support of Gucci and Skype.”

I’m not sure if Jada Pinkett Smith is officially connected to Equality Now other than being on an honorary committee that includes other concerned celebrities like Jane Fonda, Rob Reiner, Lily Tomlin, and Reese Witherspoon, but Jada has apparently put her money where her heart is because the Equality Now Facebook page shared a message thanking everyone in attendance, the event’s sponsors Gucci and Skype, and then added, “thank you Jada Pinkett Smith for your amazing donation!”
They also tweeted their appreciation to Jada:
