“Amazon Prime Day,” the Amazon.com 20th Birthday Party Sale, is going to be commerce-tacular

Next week, Amazon.com will mark its 20th birthday. In celebration, America’s largest internet-based retailer has decided to gift its customers–hobbit-style–with an event the company is calling “Amazon Prime Day.”

What does that mean, exactly? According to the company itself, it means deals. Lots and lots of deals. Amazon explains it this way:


Amazon Prime Day is a global shopping event, offering more deals than Black Friday, exclusively for Prime members. On Wednesday, July 15 new and existing members will be able to shop thousands of Lightning Deals [and] Deals of the Day, and will receive unlimited Free Two-Day Shipping. Members will find deals starting at midnight PDT, with new deals starting throughout the day, as often as every ten minutes.


It’s the “more deals than Black Friday” part of the festivities that has customers salivating. And, while Amazon hasn’t yet specified what exactly will be on sale when, the statement promises that the deals will affect basically everything already available on the site: “Prime members can find deals on products across categories including electronics, toys, video games, movies, clothing, patio, lawn and garden, sports and outdoor items[,] and more.”

Amazon Prime Day is, of course, for Amazon Prime members only. If you’re not a Prime member, Amazon is allowing a free, 30-day trial, starting now, beyond which the membership fee holds at $99 per year.

And, in the spirit of true global compassion, the company is making Amazon Prime Day available for customers in nine countries: the U.S. and Canada in North America; the U.K., Spain, Austria, France, Germany, and Italy in Europe; and, in Asia, Japan.

Amazon Prime Day is Wednesday, July 15th. If you’re interested, mark your calendars now, and make sure to set your watches for whatever time midnight PST translates to in your zone.
