The most coveted female lead of the decade has been given to relative newcomer Rooney Mara! The 25-year-old actress will play the role of badass computer hacker loner Lisbeth Salander in the U.S. remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo based on the worldwide best-selling thriller by Swedish author Stieg Larsson. The movie is the first of three in Larsson’s “Millenium Trilogy” to be followed by The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.
Director David Fincher had said he hopes to cast an “unknown” in the role and that’s essentially what he has done by bringing Rooney Mara on board. The petite brunette is the younger sister of actress Kate Mara and her limited resume includes roles alongside Emma Roberts in Dare and The Winning Season, a supporting role in Michale Cera’s Youth In Revolt, the lead of Nancy Holbrook in the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street and she will be in the upcoming film The Social Network about the founding of Facebook starring as Mark Zuckerberg’s girlfriend (who breaks up with him, motivating him to start Facebook).
Most of what I have seen of Mara, including her “tough girl” role in A Nightmare On Elm Street, is a delicate and pretty young girl so I have to admit I’m a bit worried. But, this is a HUGE project and I have to assume that her audition was impressive 🙂 Similar things were being said about actress Noomi Rapace when she was cast in the Swedish version of the film and she crushed the doubters with a tour de force performance that left critics’ jaws on the theater floor. I will remain optimistic that Rooney will do the same!
Until then, let’s soak up some more of her prettiness with lots of red carpet and event pictures from the last couple of years. I’ll toss in a Nightmare screen capture or two for a little bit of somber Lisbethean darkness…
