It’s too bad Law and Order is gone, or you know they would write up an amazing episode on the ugly, sex, drugs and money fueled divorce of oil heir Peter Getty and rags-to-riches wife Jacqui Getty. It’s being called one of the “ugliest divorces” in Los Angeles, a town that welcomes people like Michael Lohan with open arms.
Here are the details: Peter and Jacqui married in a big-money, lavish wedding in Napa in 2000. While Jacqui comes from much more humble roots, she is no stranger to the fabulous circle; prior to Peter, she was with Francis Ford Coppola’s son Gio, with whom she had a daughter, Gia.
The problem with Peter was that he could never find an identity beyond being a rich trust-fund kid. Even an attempt at blogging for SF Gate last year ago just got him mocked by Gawker. The Daily Beast lists other failures: a deal to write a screenplay for Francis Ford Coppola that he never delivered on, a record label, and a publishing house. Unfortunately, none of it stuck, and Peter found himself turning to cocaine, Internet porn (friends say he had a “man cave” where he would retreat for hours) and other women.
It was the cheating that led Jacqui to seek divorce from Peter. She found sunglasses and earrings that were not hers in the house, and to make matters worse: she found a nude photo of a neighbor on their home computer, who Peter was supporting. Jacqui also alleges that Peter broke her arm while on a bender in 2008.
The last time they were in court, a few weeks ago in New York, Peter showed up alone and could barely stay awake for the proceedings. Jacqui showed up with an entourage of famous pals, including her old friends the Coppolas. She’s asking for $300,00 a month to cover expenses. Of this, she says it’s just what she’s gotten used to as a Getty: “We had a lifestyle that I am certain is beyond what most people could imagine or will ever be able to enjoy.”
