Foo Fighters forced to cancel remainder of tour after Dave Grohl breaks leg

Grohl Screwed

Dave Grohl breaks leg: The Foo Fighters have been forced to cancel the remainder of their European tour due to Grohl’s major injury. The distraught Foo Fighters frontman updated the band’s website and Facebook page with a personal message just over an hour ago, explaining the necessary cancelation and promising to make up the dozens of axed dates. He also shared the above photograph of his leg post-surgery, complete with a half-dozen metal screws in it. Not bad, rock-and-roll-wise…but still disappointing for the millions of Foo Fighters fans who’d bought tickets to see the band this summer.

Grohl broke his leg when he fell off the stage during the second song of the band’s set at Gothenburg, Sweden’s Ullevi Stadium this past Sunday. He then missed two songs while getting medical treatment–drummer Taylor Hawkins took over vocals–and then came back to finish the complete, two-hour gig, because Dave Grohl is a rock and roll madman.

Grohl’s complete letter to fans explaining the cancelations is quite lengthy; you can read it in full here. The following is a condensed excerpt:

Here’s the not so witty bit…….My doctors have advised me to lay low for a while. The most important thing now is for me to recover from the surgery, to keep my leg elevated so as to keep swelling down and prevent any infection/complication that could do long term damage. I’m not out of the woods yet, folks…

Which means, and it kills me to say it…..the doctors have told us to cancel shows. I’m really so sorry, guys. You know I hate to do it, but I’m afraid it’s just not physically possible for me at the moment. We’re doing our best right now to work out a plan, so bear with us. You know we’re good for our word. But for now, I need to make sure we have YEARS of gigs ahead of us….

You have always stood by our band, and we will always stand by you. Like I say at every show, we wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you guys. And I mean that. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. And I will do everything I can to come back and give you a night to remember for the rest of your lives AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

The following European shows have been canceled:

June 19 – London, UK – Wembley Stadium
June 20 – London, UK – Wembley Stadium
June 23 – Edinburgh, UK – BT Murrayfield Stadium
June 25 – Werchter, Belgium – Festivalpark Werchter
June 26 – Glastonbury Festival 2015

The Foo Fighters are still on track to undergo a major North American concert tour this summer. Their first scheduled U.S. date is at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. on July 4th. So far, there’s been no mention of canceling those dates.

For now, speculation is widespread as to who will take over the Foos’ headlining spot at the UK’s prestigious Glastonbury Festival. Early money is on Metallica, who are currently on a break between European festival runs, and who had a controversial, but celebrated turn at Glastonbury 2014.
