Company pulls Kat Von D lipstick after complaints over offensive name
Makeup retailer Sephora has pulled one of its celebrity-endorsed lipsticks off the shelves after receiving complaints over its offensive name.
“Celebutard” lipstick, a creamy beige shade of Painted Love Lipstick by Kat Von D, started catching the ire of a number of people and groups as it began gathering more attention via social media last week. Organizations including Down Syndrome Uprising and All About Developmental Disabilities aired grievances over the name.
Via Sephora about the line:
Designed by reality television star Kat Von D especially for Sephora, Painted Love Lipstick takes Kat’s signature lip color, a sophisticated red, and expands it into a range of smoldering shades, from crimson to blood red. It comes housed in a deluxe tube with a clear Lucite bottom that shows off the color inside, and the cap is stenciled with silver roses on matte black—inspired by Kat’s favorite tattoo.
Sephora didn’t respond for a few days but on Wednesday decided to remove “Celebutard” from shelves and stores. In a statement the company said:
“It has come to our attention that the name of one shade of a lipstick we carry has caused offense to some of our clients and others. We are deeply sorry for that, and we have ceased sale of that shade both in our stores and online.”
As for Kat? She tweeted, “At the end of the day, it’s just a f**king lipstick.” She’s since deleted it.
Do you think the name was offensive or do you agree with Kat’s temporarily tweeted opinion?
