Original coach CeeLo Green’s leaving The Voice for a good reason
After four seasons in the red spinning chair, original coach CeeLo Green is apparently a little too dizzy to go on with The Voice.
“I’m not coming back at all,” CeeLo said during Wednesday’s Ellen DeGeneres Show. “I don’t want to wear out my welcome there. You know what I’m saying? I have so many other things that I want to do. I haven’t released an album in four years. I’m almost done with my album.”
“We’ll appreciate the music but we’ll miss you on The Voice,” Ellen told CeeLo. “I had no idea. I just thought you were taking a leave. But you’re going to be amazing at anything you do.”
CeeLo added, “I didn’t mean to drop the bomb today.”
CeeLo appeared on the first three seasons of the show. He and Christina Aguilera took a hiatus for season No. 4, when Shakira and Usher stepped in. CeeLo and Christina returned for last fall’s season No. 5 and were expected to return for season No. 7. Despite having six judges in the rotation, only Blake Shelton and Adam Levine have coached winning singers.
CeeLo told Ellen DeGeneres he won’t have trouble staying busy: He begins a tour with Lionel Richie this spring. Then he plans to continue his relationship with NBC.
“I have a television show development deal with them as well and hopefully some other talk show opportunities for later in the year. But yeah, I’m going to miss The Voice too. So I’m not coming back guys.”
There’s no word on who could replace CeeLo’s spot in the spinning chair. Fortunately, The Voice executives have a bit of breathing room: Season No. 6 begins on Feb. 24 with Usher, Shakira, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine.
